PowerTicker gathers information from the following online financial sites. Most of these sites offer free delayed stock quotes, which is well suited to the casual investor. A few offer stock quotes in real time. Indexes are generally reported in real time. And mutual funds are valuated once a day, so don’t expect the same excitement you get when tracking individual stocks.

Upgrading your sources

From time to time these sites change the format they use to look up and display their stock quotes. When this happens, PowerTicker may be unable to retrieve information for your stocks, or the information it displays may be inaccurate or incomplete.

For each source we support, we have developed a small, self-contained file. Under normal circumstances, when a source changes, PowerTicker automatically downloads just the new file it needs, without the need to upgrade the entire application.

To manually download these files, locate the source in the list below, click on the link for your operating system, and follow the installation instructions at the right.

Mac OS 9: Inside the folder containing the application is a folder named Sources. Move the new source file there and delete the old version.

Mac OS X: Control Click on the PowerTicker icon and from the menu choose Show Package Contents. Locate the folder Contents/ MacOS/ Sources. Move the new source file there and delete the old version.

Windows: Locate the Sources folder. By default this is on your C drive in the folder Program Files/ PowerTicker. Move the new source file there and delete the old version.

CANOE Money is based in Toronto, and offers access to a wide variety of financial products and services along with timely and comprehensive financial news and information. Their stock quotes are provided by Reuters and are delayed by 15 minutes.

Globeinvestor.com is based in Toronto, and has financial data on over 2,200 publicly-traded Canadian companies and 6,500 U.S. companies. You can obtain updated quotes on over 18,000 stocks (with 5 years of historical price data). Market quotes are updated every 15 minutes (20 minutes for the NYSE and other American exchanges). Reuters news and press newswires deliver breaking news and updates throughout the day.

PC Quote is based in Chicago. From their website, they offer data for more than 250,000 issues on all U.S. and Canadian equities and options. Their quotes are delayed 20 minutes, unless otherwise noted.

Quicken.com is a service of Intuit, based in Mountain View, California, and offers a comprehensive set of financial news, information, and tools. Nasdaq data is delayed at least 15 min; other data is delayed at least 20 minutes.

Quote.com is based in Mountain View, California, and offers free delayed security quotes for securities traded on U.S. and Canadian exchanges; this includes over 12,000 stocks; 100,000 options; 300 indexes; 500 commodity futures; and 7,500 mutual funds. Quotes from the New York Stock Exchange and the American Stock Exchange are delayed by at least 20 minutes. All other quotes are delayed by at least 15 minutes.

Swiss Quote is based in Gland, Switzerland, and specializes in the diffusion in real-time of financial information over the Internet as well as in several Swiss newspaper’s daily publications, Swissquote manages Switzerland’s most visited financial information sites. Quotes from the Swiss Exchange (SWX) and certain European sources are received in real time. All other quotes are delayed by 15 minutes.

Yahoo! is based in Santa Clara and boasts of being the world’s most popular online guide to the Internet. Their stock quotes are provided by Reuters Limited, and are delayed 15 minutes for the NASDAQ exchange, 20 minutes otherwise.

Yahoo! Australia & NZ is based in Sydney, NSW and provides a localized version of Yahoo’s guide to the Internet. Quote data is provided by Bourse Data Australia and sourced from the Australian Stock Exchange. Quotes available are for previous end-of-day close only.

Yahoo! UK & Ireland is based in London and provides a localized version of Yahoo’s guide to the Internet. Their stock quotes are provided by Standard & Poor’s Comstock and Fininfo España and are sourced from the London Stock Exchange, Bourse de Paris, Cedborsa and Deutsche Bšrse AG, Oslo Børs, and Stockholms Fondbörs. Quotes from the London Stock Exchange are delayed by 20 minutes, 15 minutes for Deutsche Börse AG, Cedborsa, and Oslo Børs, and 30 minutes for Bourse de Paris and Stockholms Fondbörs. Quotes from Spanish markets are provided by Sociedad de Bolsas, Bolsa de Madrid, Bolsa de Barcelona, Bolsa de Bilbao, and Bolsa de Valencia. Quotes from the Continuous Market are delayed by 15 minutes. Quotes from the outcry markets are closing prices.
