Registration and password problems
- PowerTicker accepts my registration number, but the next time I open PowerTicker, it says I’m not registered.

Try re-entering your registration number.

On a Macintosh, you should first disable any virus checking you have installed on your Macintosh. PowerTicker writes your registration number to an invisible file in the Preferences folder, and some virus checkers may find this suspicious. After you’ve registered PowerTicker, don’t forget to re-enable your virus protection.

On Windows NT, you may first need to log in as the administrator or as a power user.

- I’ve registered PowerTicker, but when I start the application, it informs me that there is another copy with my registration number running on the network.
Macintosh only

When you start PowerTicker, the application registers itself on the network. If PowerTicker stops unexpectedly, the network will be left thinking that PowerTicker is running, and you will get this message when you attempt to start PowerTicker again. The solution is to restart your computer.

In order to take advantage of all the new features we added to PowerTicker 2.0, you will need to purchase a new PowerTicker registration number. Previous MacTicker customers can purchase their registration number for $19.95 directly from the Galleon Software by clicking here (make sure you have your old registration number handy). Or click to send us a message.

On May 4, 2001, Galleon Software finalized the purchase of PowerTicker from Aladdin Systems. Shortly after this we released version 2.1. This version recognizes old Aladdin registration numbers if they are already installed on your system, but if you need to re-register the product at any time, you’ll need to enter a Galleon registration number. To obtain this new number, click to send us a message, including your name, your original Aladdin registration number, and the e-mail address you used to purchase the product.

- Adobe Acrobat Reader is asking me for a password when I try to open the PowerTicker manual.
Macintosh only

There is a problem with certain versions of StuffIt Expander that can corrupt Adobe Acrobat PDF files so that they cannot be opened. (Adobe Acrobat Reader asks you for a password for what is an unprotected document.) There are three ways to avoid this problem:

(1) Change your Cross Platform preferences in StuffIt Expander to Never Convert Text Files to Macintosh Format.

(2) When you download the PowerTicker archive, choose Save Link As to prevent StuffIt Expander from automatically decompressing your download. (This works differently in different browsers.) Then double-click on the PowerTicker archive and let the built-in decompressor do its job.

or . . .

(3) Click here to download the uncompressed version of the manual.

Display problems
- When I open a report for a stock I get an errors displayed at the bottom of the window, and all the values in the stock ticker appear to be N/A.

(1) If you are not receiving any quotes or if you are seeing error codes in the stock reports, then your computer is probably connecting to the Internet through a firewall or a proxy server and you haven’t configured PowerTicker correctly.

PowerTicker is compatible with such security systems, but requires you to properly configure your user ID and password.

On Windows, PowerTicker automatically prompts you for this information.

On the Macintosh, you must enter this information in your preferences, as described in the documentation.

(2) Your source files may be out of date. Click here for more information.

- The information for the stocks I’ve specified are incorrect. The numbers are wrong or I’m getting a lot of N/As in the stock reports.

The problem is likely with the way youve set these stocks up.

(1) Make sure that the symbol is the symbol used by the source defined in your preferences. Different webpages sometime use different symbols from what you might be familiar with.

(2) Make sure that youve chosen the correct exchange for each stock. Not all stocks are listed on every exchange.

(3) Verify your choices by bringing up the full report for that stock and clicking on the globe-and-arrow button at the bottom left of the window. This opens your web browser and displays the web page from where PowerTicker is gathering its information for this stock. If it doesnt show what you expect, verify the stock symbol and exchange on that website and edit the information in PowerTicker.

To bring up the full report for a stock, choose that stock from the Stocks menu and click on the zoom box until you have the largest report.

(4) If you are having problems with most of your stocks, try changing your standard sources. To do so, choose Edit -> Stock Preferences and click the Sources tab. Alternatively, your source files may be out of date. Click here for more information.

(5) If you are able to get most of your stocks to update properly but you still have a few stubborn ones, you can specify the source for these stocks individually. To do so, from the Stocks menu choose Edit and double-click on the stock you want to edit. Click the Sources tab, click Override Source, and choose an alternative source.

Note: When you change information for a stock, its a good idea to push the update button (the spinning arrows) on the full report for that stock. If you change your choice of sources, we advise you to choose Portfolio -> Update All Reports so that all information for all stocks is updated.

And one final note: When the markets open and close there is a transition period when some of PowerTicker’s sources display information that PowerTicker cannot interpret. If you encounter display problems you might consider changing your choice of sources, or restarting PowerTicker.

- All the data fields for stocks on the Australian Exchange show as N/A. I know I have entered the symbols correctly, is there any way I can see the information for these stocks?

Download the latest version of PowerTicker. This problem was fixed in version 2.1.

- My stock ticker runs slowly in the background.

When an application is in the foreground, it’s given more attention by your computer. When it’s in the background it gets less.

Furthermore the Macintosh architecture gives foreground applications control of the computer, and if they decide to starve other applications, then theres not a lot we can do.

Other problems
- I have just installed PowerTicker 2.0. When I try to use my PowerTicker Control Strip module to open PowerTicker, it either returns an error saying that the software does not exist, or it launches my older version of MacTicker.
Macintosh only

If you had a previous version of MacTicker and then installed the newest version of PowerTicker, the older Control Strip module for MacTicker was not removed. This means you now have two Control Strip modules—one for PowerTicker and one for MacTicker—and your computer is confusuing the two. Remove the older module by following these steps.

(1) Open your Control Strip Modules folder. This is located in the System Folder on your main hard drive.

(2) Find the MacTicker Control Strip module

(3) Move it to the Trash.

(4) Restart your computer.

You should now have a single, correct module.

Configuration questions
- Can I configure PowerTicker to accept real-time quotes?

We are looking into supporting streaming real time quotes. However, we cannot guarantee that PowerTicker will support the quote service that you currently use, but we will be doing our best to support as many different services as possible. If you downloaded PowerTicker from our website, we’ll send you an e-mail as soon as this feature is available.

- Can I configure PowerTicker to use my favorite browser?

On Windows, PowerTicker automatically uses the system’s default browser.

On the Macintosh, PowerTicker uses the browser specified in Internet Config, or the Internet Control Panel included with System 8.5.

If you’re using Internet Config, follow these steps:

(1) Open Internet Config and click the Helpers button.

(1) Your list of helper applications appears.

(2) Double-click on the HTTP entry.

(2) The Add Helper dialog appears.

(3) Click on Change Helper and select your favorite browser.

(4) Click OK.

(5) Choose File -> Save

(6) Quit Internet Config and restart PowerTicker.

If you’re running 8.5, follow these steps:

(1) Open the Internet Control Panel.

(2) Click on the Web tab.

(3) Make your choice from the Default Web Browser at the bottom of dialog.

(4) Close the control panel and save your changes.

Other questions
- How do I get PowerTicker to recognize the securities I entered in my old version of MacTicker?
Macintosh only

When you launch PowerTicker for the first time, the application looks for any old MacTicker files and automatically converts them into the new PowerTicker format. When PowerTicker 2.0 was first released there was problem that prevented this from happening. PowerTicker 2.0.1 fixed this problem.

Back to the questions...     Top of page...

- Is there a 68K version of PowerTicker available for older Macintoshes?
Macintosh only

No, you must use a Power Macintosh to run PowerTicker.

Back to the questions...     Top of page...

- Is there a limit on how many securities PowerTicker can track?

On the Macintosh, PowerTicker can track as many as 1000 securities; more if you allocate more memory to the applicaion. The Portfolio is limited to around 185, but again you can increase the memory allocation.

On Windows, memory allocation is automatic, so you are limited only by the configuration of your computer and the other applications you have running.
