eMergingIn addition to developing and maintaining Galleon Software’s corporate design and communication standards, I’ve also been responsible for the company’s product logos, including this animated version of the eMerge logo, which appears within the product, on the web, and embossed into the cover of the eMerge user manual.

SoftArc on AOLSoftArc, Inc.
July 1994 to October 1996

The original SoftArc logo was designed by Steven Asbury, one of the founders of the company. It was a black-and-white, bit-mapped image that reproduced poorly at all but the smallest sizes. I revised it first as a scalable vector-based illustration and later as a series of gray-scale renditions. The image on the right is based on the vector version and was part of SoftArc’s official presence on America Online.

SoftArc advertisementSoftArc Inc.This gray-scale version was first designed for Apple’s ill-fated eWorld system but ended up doing effective double duty in subsequent printed material. At larger sizes (as seen at the right and on the cover of SoftArc Offline), I emphasized the pixels to bring out the idea of a computer generated, anti-aliased arch— a “soft” arch, as it were.

SoftArc standardsIn addition to these graphical standards, my staff and I defined an extensive series of communication standards and practices. We initially created this document for departmental use and primarily to guide the development of our customer documentation, but ultimately extended its influence and began actively promoting it to the entire company.

CSCW 92CSCW ’92—Sharing Perspectives
September 1991

The 1992 conferences for Computer-Supported Cooperative Work was held in Toronto. I designed this logo to represent how people can bring different perspectives together to form a useful whole, and chose the individual elements to represent different aspects of computer-supported cooperative work: space, time, people, computers, and labour. The logo appeared on stationery and signage, in presentations and advertisements, and on the final conference programme.
